Description:

Communication is a vital and often overlooked tool for emergency preparedness planning. After most emergencies and natural disasters, communication is identified as the single biggest area in need of improvement. During our communication during emergencies and disasters online training course, participants will learn the importance of having multiple forms of communication, how to be informed when an emergency or disaster strikes, how to make sure your program is prepared during a 911 call, and how to communicate internally and externally.Through a mix of slides, graphics, videos, and real-world scenarios, participants will learn how to communicate with parents, staff, emergency management, law enforcement, and other essential institutions before, during, and after an emergency or disaster.

Learning Goals and Objectives:

  • Define the term ‘crisis communication’
  • Describe the importance of crisis communication plans
  • Identify the key elements of effective messaging
  • Explain the role of the media and how to work with them during a crisis
  • Describe at least two actions you can take today to be better prepared for communicating during a crisis
  • List two considerations you should keep in mind when engaging with the media
  • Identify at least two ways to contact first responders in an emergency. List the pros and cons of each.
  • Identify the many ways to push out information during an emergency. List the pros and cons of each.
  • Identify external stakeholders that may seek information during an emergency or natural disaster.
  • Identify at least two methods of receiving emergency alerts and information.
